Real Club de Golf Sotogrande »
The Royal Golf Club of Sotogrande is considered as one of the masterpieces of Robert Trent Jones who chose this course as one of his five favorites from more than 500 courses he designed worldwide according to his book entitled Golf, the Magnificent Challenge, published in 1988.
Opened in 1964, the Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande (RCG Sotogrande) was built only 150 meters from the Mediterranean, being perfectly integrated with the natural surroundings which are a great challenge to the better players, but accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
The course has a par of 72 and measures 6.304 metres. It offers long tees, wide fairways and elevated greens carefully moulded and very fast, being the biggest difficulty of the course. Of circa the 100 bunkers on the course 69 of them are placed around the greens which, warn the player to have great accuracy when attacking the pins. There is a great variety of holes in terms of shape and distances, as well as in regards to the vegetation: the mixture of cork oaks, pine trees, palm trees and an abundance of other species, provide the course with a wonderful personality and beauty.
The club has been under an extensive restoration program, which includes a new drainage system, the replacement of all grass and the reconstruction of all greens, bunkers and tees. In addition to this, the restoration of the design intends to recover the original contours of greens and bunkers which Trent Jones originally devised.
The RCG Sotogrande also has a nine-hole par 3 course, suitable for children, beginners and those wishing to improve their game, as almost every club in the bag is used when playing. Its driving range has 30 places with natural grass. Players can also enjoy the pitching and putting areas, a short game area with an impeccable maintenance. It has three bunkers, pitching green with different pin positions and a putting green.
Its restaurant has gained a high reputation among other restaurants in the area, offering breathtaking views of the course. Members can also enjoy an excellent bar/cafeteria service situated in 2 ample lounges and 2 terraces which look straight on to the course.
The course was elevated to “Royal” status in 1994 and is surrounded by some splendid villas, and even occasional glimpses of the sea from a few holes. It is understandable that Sotogrande is one of the more exclusive courses in the area, made so by a relatively hefty visitor green fee (available only on weekdays) and the club’s desire to maintain a top class facility for its members.
